The Mazda Bongo Brawny has been compared to the Mazda Bongo Friendee. Whereas the Friendee was intended for use as a family vehicle, the Brawny was generally aimed at the commercial market and used as a van. It does not have the same interior, exterior or mechanical specification as a Bongo Friendee. Earlier Brawnys have a 2 litre petrol engine and produce about 76ps at 4000rpm with a maximum torque of 17.5kg*m at 2000rpm. Compare this to the commonly available Friendee 2.5 diesel with approx max torque of 125ps at 4000rpm and 30.0kg*m at 2000rpm. The Brawny was produced as an automatic and manual vehicle, and later with a more powerful 3 litre diesel engine.
